Report on 600 Surveyed Freelancers Covers Issues From Income to Reasons for Entering Field; Free event to be Held Thursday, Sept. 29
DANVERS, Mass. - September 13 /Publishers Newswire/ -- A revealing portrait of the current state of freelance journalism will be the topic of a Copyright Clearance Center 'Beyond the Book' teleconference on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT). The survey of more than 600 freelance journalists covers a range of issues, from income to job satisfaction.
The free teleconference will be hosted by the not-for-profit Copyright Clearance Center (www.copyright.com/beyondthebook), the world's premier provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions. Highlighted findings of the survey include:
o A majority (56%) left permanent jobs to become freelancers, and more than 90% said they considered freelancing a long-term career and not a temporary situation;
o Women freelancers outnumber men by three to one, and college graduates make up 90 percent of all freelancers;
o One in three U.S. freelancers responding to the survey lives in the metropolitan New York City region and surrounding Mid-Atlantic states
o Nearly one-quarter reported earning more than $50,000 in annual income.
Registration is at beyondthebook@copyright.com, or call Copyright Clearance Center at 1-800-982-3887 ext. 2420. Space for the program is limited.
The one-hour program will include an interview with Doresa Banning, a freelance journalist and University of Nevada graduate student, who conducted the survey, as well as audience questions. Banning surveyed members of the National Writers Union and the American Society of Journalists & Authors.
"As a freelancer myself, I understand only too well the importance of knowing the business challenges of the job, as well as setting realistic expectations," said Banning, who has reported for the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Nevada Business Journal, Tahoe Quarterly and American Writer. She is managing editor of Big Sky Journal, Bozeman, MT, a literary and arts magazine.
"For freelancers, the critical emphasis is on freedom," said Christopher Kenneally, Copyright Clearance Center's Director of Author Relations, who will moderate the call and discussion. "Being your own boss and setting your own hours rank high on the list of advantages. And with nearly half of freelancers receiving health care coverage via a spouse, the drawback of not being a staff writer - and not receiving benefits -- is reduced. Still, the freelancer's life has difficulties, including maintaining work and cash flow. Our teleconference will give writers a means of sharing their suggestions and solutions."
