DENVER, Colo. - Sept. 1 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Bob Gerberg is among America's foremost authorities on every aspect of professional and executive job hunting. More than 7 million copies of books and programs he has created are in circulation. His ideas have been instrumental in helping millions of people throughout the world who have looked for new positions. Over more than 20 years he has authored dozens of books and audio cassettes. His newest book is '15 New Rules For Job Hunting Success.'

Here are comments from his newest book:

"For over 20 years I've been researching the job market and analyzing how professionals can find new jobs more easily. During this time, I've seen the employment markets go through some remarkable changes. Did you know that every year, for the past 20 years, whether in good economies or bad, the time it takes to find a good new position - has grown longer?

"Of course, 20 years ago, the job market wasn't nearly so complex. Answering ads was always competitive, and if that didn't work, you could visit a few recruiters or do some networking. Some might also try direct mail to CEOs. Other than that all you needed was a resume with a historical format... and some good references.

"What happened to make job hunting so complicated? For some time we've been in the midst of a communications revolution. With the ability to use PCs, faxes and emails, people now distribute many millions of resumes each week! They didn't use to do that. The growth of the Internet alone has changed forever the magnitude of resumes in circulation.

"Why are there so many people in the market? Because of financial pressures, employers routinely go through staff reductions when sales decline. This has led to sharply declining employee loyalty. The concept of long term employment has disappeared from the American landscape. Now, instead of looking for a job every 7 to 10 years... people change jobs on an average of once every 3.5 years. This alone has doubled historical levels of job market competition. Another factor is that people are living and working longer.

"Further complications stem from the emergence of job boards. Many people now leave their resumes posted online-even after they accept new positions. So, in today's job market, we have both active and passive job seekers. One major job board claims that 47 million resumes are in their database - which they sell to employers as a recruiting tool.

"The bottom line is that we now have a level of competition that was unimaginable just a decade or two ago. At least 30 million resumes are circulating at any moment in time... while the jobs available are only a fraction of that number. To succeed in a job search today, you must first have an understanding of the new job market and how it works.

"Next on your 'must do' list... your second challenge, if you will... is that you need to get connected to the openings and leads to openings you require. Using advanced technology is the only way to bring this information to your fingertips.

"Today, people also face a third challenge. To be effective, you need to communicate through multiple resumes, letters, emails, phone conversations and interviews. Your fourth challenge will be to succeed in 'competitive interviewing situations.' Even after you get the interviews you want... you need to recognize that there will often be up to 10 qualified candidates.

"These challenges are why most people, if they depend on their past job hunting methods, will have an exceedingly small chance of connecting with a really good job."
