TORONTO, Canada - July 20 -- Today, Wednesday July 20, during the meeting of Council, Mayor David Miller presented a commemorative plaque to each of the five finalists for the 2005 Toronto Book Awards. Each Councillor received a copy of the five nominated books.

The finalists and their books are:

Constance Backhouse and Nancy L. Backhouse for their biography The Heiress vs. The Establishment: Mrs. Campbell's Campaign for Legal Justice (UBC Press)

David Bezmozgis for his story collection Natasha and Other Stories (HarperCollins Publishers)

Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall for his memoir Down to This: Squalor and Splendour in a Big-city Shantytown (Random House Canada)

Don Coles for his novel Doctor Bloom's Story (Alfred A. Knopf Canada)

Russell Smith for his novel Muriella Pent (Doubleday Canada)

"Since 1974, we have been honouring authors who tell Toronto stories," said Mayor Miller. "This year's shortlist is a fine selection of literary voices who reflect Toronto's vibrancy and diversity."

The Toronto Book Awards is part of the City's commitment to literacy. In keeping with the United Nations' declaration, Toronto City Council proclaimed 1990 to 2010 as decades dedicated to the elimination of illiteracy in the City of Toronto.

The five volunteer members of the Toronto Book Awards Committee selected the shortlist from an assortment of 73 submissions - covering everything from fiction to non-fiction, from short stories to children's books, all of which are set in Toronto.

The awards offer $15,000 in prize money. Each finalist will receive $1,000 and the winning author receives the remaining prize money. The winner will be announced in a ceremony on September 7. The finalists will read from their books at Word On The Street on September 25.
